Oh they’re going to need salvation.

Not just making it illegal, but making being gay punishable with death.

This is one of the many reasons why I walk by every single red bucket in the run-up to Christmas. They’re not getting my money, I don’t care how nice the people ringing bells are.

Ever since the time they threatened to close all their soup kitchens in NYC if a law that did something as simple as allow companies to extend spousal benefits to their employee’s same-sex domestic partners I have refused to buy from them or donate to them. 

It’s that time of year again! In case people don’t know… the Salvation Army is shitty peoples.

Also, the married women are not paid (and therefore can’t qualify for assistance if they should ever divorce, etc). And worth “of course” less than a man.

Be nice to the bell ringers, they most likely have no idea about this.  If you really want to do something to the bell ringers, try talking to them about this and ask them if they know. 

And shop at Target because they don’t allow the Salvation Army there.

Reblogging for the last comment especially.  The Salvation Army is shitty but it’s been an institution for a very long time, and a lot of regular folk have no idea about these things.  They just want to help the poor and think this is a good way to do it.

We can fight an institution without being dicks to people who genuinely mean well.

St. Louis Area Cats – these two urgently need adoption, rescue or foster.

Hey all.  I’m sorry to spam you with non-comic stuff. I try not to do this too routinely, but sometimes I can’t not.

Shelter Friends works very hard to network and get cats and dogs out of the municipal animal control shelter here. They work so hard, in fact, they’ve effectively turned this former high kill rate shelter into a no-kill shelter for the past 5 years running.  Unfortunately, adoptions have been very slow this season, nearby rescues have issued an intake freeze, and these two beautiful cats might fall victim to the situation on October 30th. They’re on the euthanasia list. It’s rather an emergency.

 – Bronte (top) is a shy, sweet adult female who loooves meal time.
   Here’s a video of her.

 – Charlie (bottom) is a bit of both worlds – he’s got some loner edge, but he can     be the very affectionate life of the party when he feels like it too.
   A video of him being very lovey.

Both are FeLV/FIV negative and up to date on shots. Neither seem to be super-fans of other cats (no attacking – just hissing and hiding), but a noisy, chaotic shelter is the least ideal place to see a cat’s real personality shine, so there’s every chance they’d adjust and thrive in a moderately quiet home with other animals.

tips for when you are in a period of high stress

  • set priorities and reduce your overall activity

Whenever you’re facing more stress than usual, try to reduce your activities, set priorities, and focus on short-term goals. However, try to not avoid activity all together.

This is difficult, because the way you think about tasks changes dramatically when you are stressed. Try your best to stop during times of high stress and ask yourself “What really needs to be done now? What can I let go until some other time?” 

Also, try to recognise that you only have a limited amount of energy – you can’t push yourself too hard – and remember to take time to rest and take care. Stress drains your energy more, so try to be mindful of that. 

  • spend extra time with decisions

Stress interferes with your ability to think. The greater the stress, the more likely it is that you will make poor decisions. Wherever possible, avoid making major decisions during times of stress. But, when a decision does have to be made, try to take more time with it, and talk to people about it who are objective – they may see problems or options you didn’t think off because of your reduced ability to do so while being stressed. 

  • plan ahead and take actions during times when stress is low

A lot of the time, you know when a period of stress is coming. When that is the case, try to take some time to plan ahead, make decisions, and take action in advance while you’re feeling better – this reduces the amount of thinking you’ll need to worry about during a period of high stress. Having a plan helps you to focus and prioritise tasks. 

For those times when a period of high stress may come suddenly, try to take some time out to relax and collect yourself, so you’re able to plan ahead and prioritise. This can be difficult, so it’s okay if you can’t. Just being mindful of how your body and mind can be affected by stress can help you through. 

some gentle reminders for if you are stressed

  • take a moment to breathe; close your eyes, put whatever you are doing down, and count slowly to ten
  • take a break if you’ve been working for a long time on something
  • write a list of what you need to do, and then slowly put the tasks into order of priority
  • take some time out of your day to relax and unwind to the best of your ability
  • try your best to not push yourself past your limits
  • reach out for help if you need to
  • you can do this
  • i believe in you
  • it’ll be okay
