When I was driving in Florida, I saw this car that was completely covered in bumper stickers that read “No whining! Get a job!” with the American flag on the background.
The thing is…
It’s not that east when you’re disabled. Or when your job application is thrown out because your name “sounds Mexican”. Or when it’s thrown out because “a girl can’t handle this job”. Or when your employer gives you 7 hours instead of 8 in order to avoid paying for your benefits. Or when you get fired for wearing your hair in its natural form. Or when despite working multiple jobs, you still can’t afford rent and basic necessities. Or when your employer doesn’t want a transgender employee because “it’ll make customers uncomfortable”. Or when you aren’t feminine enough to appeal to customers, because somehow sex appeal is part of the job requirements. Or when you get fired for taking too many days off because the state slashed your childcare and healthcare benefits. Or when you get pregnant because you don’t have reliable access to contraception. Or when your superior sexually harasses or assaults you, and you have to choose between seeking justice and keeping your job.
“Getting a job” is not that fucking easy. That’s not how the world works outside of the small bubble of privilege.
