Today Luederitz Bay had the visit of two Orcas (aka killer whales). We first got alerted by Rene Rossler and managed to spot them at the entrance of the lagoon off Shark Island. They made their way all the way up past the Nest Hotel and the oyster farms and then returned along the western shore; last seen off Kartoffelbucht about four hours later.
There was some evidence of feeding off Griffith’s Bay… possibly a shark or a skate. This instantly attracted some gulls which avidly picked up some scraps for lunch.
Interestingly enough both orcas today had a collapsed dorsal fin! While collapsed fins are common in captive orcas (particularly males), they are rare in wild populations. To get two individuals with collapsed fins is extremely unusual indeed!
