My family is very physically affectionate, but some of my cousin are more shy and less comfortable with hugs. One thing I try to do is get to their level and ask if they want a hug. If they express that they don’t (which is pretty much anything but hugging me), I leave it be. Their parents always try to apologize but I’m just “I’m not going to make them hug me if they don’t want to”. I even do this for my sister who never refuses physical affection because just because she’s morning okay with it doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be allowed to refuse if need be
