If you’re shopping on Thanksgiving

PLEASE DO NOT SAY “I’M SO SORRY YOU HAVE TO WORK TODAY

Stores shouldn’t be open on Thanksgiving. But we are because people like you decide to shop last second. Don’t remind us that we should be home with our fmailies when we’re catering to you instead because you tried to beat the crowds and shop last second or because you forgot stuff.

Personally, I just don’t need to hear it. I offered to work on Thanksgiving. I have no time constraints that day. I wanted the extra money. I anticpate a busy day and wanted to help out.

But not everyone else is like that. Almost every other retail worker has to work because you’re out shopping and they’re not allowed to take off. Whether it’s Thanksgiving afternoon or Thanksgiving night with Black Friday sales, they have to be there. You don’t. So please, please, PLEASE do not rub it in their faces that they have to be working.

And if you not only say, “I’m so sorry you have to work today” AND are mean to them or give them a hard time, then you’re even worse. It’s bad enough retail workers have to work when they shouldn’t for YOU. Don’t be a jerk and make things worse or more difficult for them.

As someone who works retail and who is working Thanksgiving this year so I can have Christmas off, let me say this:

If you go shopping on a national holiday, ANY holiday, not just Thanksgiving, buy your cashier something. A drink, a piece of candy, a bag of chips. Ask first, bc some places can’t accept gifts, but if you can, get them something to say thank you.

I have done this in the past, because I hate shopping on holidays but sometimes I don’t have a choice (allergy meds, medication in general, and baby supplies are all things I consider necessary and are things people don’t think to stock up on over the holidays) and so, instead of saying “I’m sorry” I say “thank you for working today, can I buy you a water bottle or a pack of gum?”

9 times out of 10, they say yes. If they say no, its because they legally can’t take anything.

A bottle of water is barely $1.50, less in most places. If you can afford to go out and shop on a holiday, you can afford to give the cashier something small in gratitude.

Try your best not to shop on the holidays. But if you do, consider your cashier, who has been on their feet all day and who is missing out on time with their family that you get to have.

For food service employees, at least sit down or delivery, tip!! Extra!! I’m talking 50-100% of your bill extra. If you can’t afford to tip extra, don’t order in and don’t go out to eat. Simple as that.

All in all, just be kind. Stand up for workers if you can, and comfort them if you can’t. The holidays are stressful. Don’t add to that stress.

Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms. We’re continuously assessing further steps we can take to improve and there is no higher priority for our team.

Please please please, for the love of everything, stop spreading fear in our community. They are not purging your blogs for having NSFW content. If your blog gets deleted and you didn’t have any of the above mentioned content, or something that could be percived as such, then please contact Tumblr Support to regain your blog.
